Hello, homies. Been feeling good.
Here I am w/ some bananas.
Tons of good things happening:
Lots of progress on Zip in terms of growth strategy experiments (we’re running a bunch of tests w/ ads, Insta Influencers, different onboarding flows, different copy, etc) which has been the focus for the last two weeks. It’s looking like a flow w/ a free trial + choosing class times before registration is really resonating w/ the audience. Check out the onboarding flow here. Please don’t start a trial unless you actually have a child who will be taking classes lol :). Shoutout to David and Alec here for spinning up new experiments so quickly!
Existing users love us. We have huge fans. At Zip, everyone on the team nearly always has 1-2 user phone call per day. Talking to users is at the center of all we do. We’ve found decent success creating a small, loyal base by just always talking to them, listening to them, and building what they want. A phone call is so powerful.
Our #1 complaint from existing users is that they want more classes. Shoutout to David for recognizing this, it’s something I didn’t really catch originally on my calls and he pushed for us to focus on more classes! In response to this, we arranged calls with about around 40-ish existing $49 /mo users over the next two weeks and plan on upselling them on a math/reading program over the phone. Basically how this works is we’ll have 3 tiers, $49 /mo (1 class / week), $99 /mo (2 classes / week), $149 /mo (3 classes / week). Before building anything, we just wanted to pitch it users on the phone and just manually do it all. Been working!! Shoutout to Alec, he’s already upsold like 10 users right over the phone this week what a legend.
Big week for the Smash Bros Melee community which is a community I’m very much involved in. A new Melee documentary is dropping called “Metagame”. This is Part Two! Part One came out in 2013 (Wikipedia) and it had a massive impact on my life. The stories of the players hype me up to this day. Whenever startup-land gets hard, I remember the players and their passion to become the absolute best.
Naruto has been so hype lately. Half-way done with the show. As always, Naruto’s character and story is something that constantly keeps me motivated and excited. He inspires me to be great. Shoutout to Masashi Kishimoto.
In NYC now. Finally, a city with some energy. Orlando, Pembroke Pines, San Diego all sucked. NYC is dope. “Hustle” energy is everywhere. Been awesome.
See yah later.
Here’s David coding w/ the bananas mid-blink (or he’s sleeping, not sure tbh).
