Zip is such an interesting company to work on. Education is just so deep and reimagining it is actually really freaking hard. Well, actually that's a lie. Reimagining it is really easy. Reimaging it and then packaging it up nicely in such a way that the customer will actually convert is the hard part.
It’s really fun.
Here’s a nice video a user sent in this week.
The last two weeks have been a slog. We’ve been running new experiments around free trials, preparing to add new subjects to Zip (math/reading incoming), running experiments with Instagram Influencers, building new features for existing users (ex. sending out “certificates” when a kid completes a class, letting kids select an avatar that shows up next to their name during class), and just adjusting to NYC life. It’s been a lot. And, I think it’s good that this week is a shorter week due to Christmas. I want everyone at Zip to take some time off, stop, analyze our learnings.
I’ve never put a lot of emphasis on “stopping”. Like, if you’ve seen me work it’s pretty much 7 days a week 8AM to 8PM at least. I can do 100+ hour weeks no problem. I just really enjoy what I do, tbh. So, I don’t see a point in stopping.
Also, maybe it’s because in the books and movies my heroes never stopped going until they acheived what they wanted to achieve. There is some of that in the back of my head as well.
But, slowly, it’s becoming clear to me that stopping every once in a while is important.
So, I’m going to try my hardest and stop for a bit later this week. Wish me luck, lads. Quite difficult for me.
🎂 One year old
Zip is officially one year old. Feels like yesterday I was asking for $25K to start it. Good times.
📚 Reading
Been reading:
Harry Potter and The Half-Blood Prince
Started “Bleach”, the Japanese manga
Also started “Creative Selection, Inside Apple’s Design Process”
I like having two “fun” books and then having one more “serious” book. I can hop between them as I please.
Highly recommend this strategy to people! Reading is about having fun and letting your mind wander into new worlds and new ideas. Basically what I’m trying to say is, you don’t need to read those boring books people on tech Twitter are telling you to read. Just start by reading comic books for 30 minutes a day. I highly recommend “Batman - The Court of Owls” which is an awesome place to start :).
